 1941 Eastern Front Campaign - Battle 12 -Romanian Advance on the Left Flank

 With the Germans advancing on the right flank, the Romanians advanced on the left flank.  Having pushed aside Soviet Platoon 4 with ease, the Romanians now faced another old opponent - Machinegun Artillery Platoon 2 - no longer as such, now just a normal platoon.

Phil took on the Romanians and Andy played the Soviets.

The Romanians were still strong.  Three squads, medium machinegun, anti-tank gun, medium mortar and armoured car.  They were still a powerful Platoon.

The Soviet HQ and two squads took cover on their left.

A squad, anti-tank gun and the BA10 armoured car defended the other flank.

The Romanian armoured car rushed up the table to attack the Soviet forces in the hedged field.

On the other flank the Soviet armoured car engaged the Romanian anti-tank gun in a duel.  The Romanians suffered heavily from their gun having no gun shield.

The right flank Soviet squad took cover.


The hedges proved scant cover for the Soviets, who retreated.


The Romanians crested the rise and a fierce fire-fight errupted.

By Turn 5 the Romanians were starting to feel the pressure and asked their armoured car to outflank the field.

The Soviets begin a withdrawal.

Some Romanian units were very depleted - and the Romanians had lost their only anti-tank gun.



A defiant rear-guard was left to cover the retreat.

Turn 7 was the last full turn, as the Soviet rear-guard also retreated.

 1941 Eastern Front Campaign - First and Last   The campaign started in March 2020 to  occupy me during the first UK lockdown.  It lasted 21 months and finished with multiplayer games with my wargaming friends.   This was Turn 2.  Five Soviet Platoons - mostly small  ones - face off against five Axis Platoons.  I bought both Tank platoons and both Soviet Machinegun Artillery platoons specifically for this campaign.  The fortified area is several bunkers and huge amounts of fortifications.  In the campaign the Axis never attacked it.  Sensibly they went around it, just the Germans did in reality in WWII. 1941 Eastern Front Campaign - Battle 6 - Capt Anatoly's Farm

With the Germans advancing on Eastern Gordinische, the Germans noted all the Soviet forces moving east.  They told the Romanians that Western Gordinische was open and vulnerable to a 'coup d' main'.   Technically the Germans were right.  But the Gordinische town Commissar was alert to the threat.  Machine Gun Artillery Platoon 2 was ordered to retreat into the town (which it could do - illegal platoons may retreat but not advance).  The Commissar then ordered each of the three bunkers in The Fortified Area to give up two MMG crews.  These 18 men were used to convert the LMG teams in MGA2, creating two 9-man LMG Squads and a 6-man rifle squad.  The Main Soviet platoon sent the new platoon the items it didn't need in its own fight in the ruined buildings - a BT7 tank, a BA10 armoured car and a light howitzer.  The platoon took up position west of the town beside the railway line, in Capt Anatoly's farm - a small farm long since abandoned due t...

1941 Eastern Front Campaign Maps

 This is the map I used.  The tiles are for a Russian Civil War game called "Beyond the River Don". Each turn Soviet, Romanian and German troops moved over the maps.  Units moving on foot went half a tile each turn; units which were tracked went three quarters of a move or one and a half if moving by road.  Wheeled units moved one square or two squares if moving by road. Turn 2.  German motorised units try and surround Gordinische but run into a Soviet tank platoon, leading to battle 1.  The Soviets have a fortified area south of the town, whilst the Romanians move on foot up the left flank. Turn 3.  Following a sucessful advance the Germans consolidate.
