1941 Eastern Front Campaign - Battle 14 - The Axis Defeated

1941 Eastern Front Campaign - Battle 14 - The Axis Defeated

The Romanians had dug-in and were awaiting the German Zug 1 platoon to assist them,  German Zug 2 were already alongside.  However, the Soviets had two platoons in a position to attack the Romanians before German Zug 1 arrived.

This was fought between Romanian Platoon 2 and Soviet platoons Guard and 3.  German platoons Zug 2 provided limited assistance from Turn 5 and German platoon Motorbike Reconnaissance provided a single motorbike combination from Turn 4.

This was the battlefield on Turn 1.  I played the Romanians whilst Bob provided all the Soviets.  Bob played Soviet Platoon 3 whilst Phil played Soviet Platoon Guard.

The Romanians started widely spread but dug-in.

The Soviet Guard Platoon was mostly Regular and included units from the Main Soviet Platoon.  This was the Guard's first battle.

Soviet Platoon 3 was a veteran of many battles, its Inexperienced troops having been replaced over and over from Reserve units.  It attacked with great elan over the open ground.

The Romanians were hit by an artillery bombardment in Turn 2.  Despite being dug-in, and many of the Soviets needing a "6" followed by a "6" to hit, the sheer volume of fire meant a steady accumulation of pins on the Romanian troops.

The pins meant the Romanian fire was not doing a lot of damage to the rushing riflemen of Platoon 3. The Romanian R2 tank takes on a T34.

The Soviet Guard Platoon advanced more slowly, using cover and going down when shot at.

The Soviets from Platoon 3 close the gap.

The Guard break cover as the Romanians take casualties and pins.

The Soviet Platoon 3 is close enough to assult and did so, destroying the Romanians in the woods.  Other Romanians started to retreat.

On Turn 5 the Germans arrived but were too late to influence the battle.  Surrounded by Soviets they took heavy casualties.

Platoon 3 were now advancing against no opposition.  The Romanians were either dead or had fled.

The Germans did manage to destroy the Soviet armoured car, but lost their Pioneer Squad, their mororbike combination and half their other squad.  The Germans and the last Romanian unit, the mortar, fled too.
